    My recent comment on FaceBook .  I think a good summary of a most basic comp

    The ` Lambertian Disk approximation temperature of a gray ball in our orbit is ~ 278.6 +- 2.3 from peri- to ap- -helion . Imposed on that is the non-flat spectrum which is ` blacker , ie: more absorptive=emissive , in the IR in part due to the CO2 in the atmosphere . This is estimated to produce an albedo ( reflectivity ) wrt the Sun's power spectrum of about 0.3 , ie: an absorptivity of ~ 0.7 . By Stefan-Boltzmann , the 4th root of that is about 0.91 .
     278.6 * 0.91 ~= 254.8 .

    That's where the 255K meme comes from .

    To say what the radiant equilibrium temperature of a ` naked Earth would be would require a meaningful estimate of its spectrum w/o an atmosphere , and would almost certainly be higher .
