#AbolishNEA
Abolish the National Endowment for the Arts .
970917| Many of my friends who are artists won`t like my stand on this , and
Senator Carol Mosely Braun of Illinois mentioned NEA funds Little City arts
program , so my brother Jack is a beneficiary ( See CoSy/Current 970727 ) ,
But I feel the NEA should be abolished . State supported art is an oxymoron
. A reason I tend to hang with artists rather than computer and business
people , is because they do what they are determined to do despite having
been told all their life to ' get a job '.
Art is the most quintesentially capitalistic market . The time and
materials invested in creation ( even for e.g.: RichardSerra ) essentially
count for nothing in its value . All that matters is the value another mind
ascribes to a particular reification of the artist`s thought and
craftmanship .
That`s a reason I also number art dealers among my friends . They are
the purest merchants , making market out mind . If it`s crazy to make art ,
it`s second order crazy to deal it .
The idea of other people choosing , in the name of the state , what art
my dollars purchase is a theft . I have few enough to spend on my own
choices . Sen Dale Bumpers actually bemoaned the fact that the NEA just
takes .38$ % citizen ( not % taxpayer ) , and lauded France which
confiscates more than 30$ from each of its people for its politicians to
dispense .
All this having been said , clearly there is a need for art for adornment
of public buildings and spaces . And the architecture of the buildings
themselves intrinsically requires aesthetic choices . In one manner or
another , these require community choices .
