Dear Mr. Armstrong,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021 (S. 4). We always appreciate hearing from Coloradans, as it helps us better represent our great state in the United States Senate.

The U.S. has a long and shameful legacy of suppressing the votes of Americans of color. The 1965 Voting Rights Act reduced some barriers to voting and held states accountable for efforts to limit voting access. In 2013 and 2021, the Supreme Court struck down key provisions in the law eliminating many hard-fought safeguards for communities of color. S. 4 would return those safeguards and limit states’ abilities to implement voting restrictions. It would also expand voting rights for Native Americans and increase protections for election workers and polling places.

The unobstructed right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. We will continue to fight to pass legislation that protects voting rights, especially those of historically disenfranchised groups. I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of S. 4, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to advocate for its passage.

We always value hearing directly from Coloradans and hope you will continue to share your thoughts as we work together for Colorado and our country. For more information about our priorities, please visit our website at www.hickenlooper.senate.gov. Again, thank you for reaching out.

Sincerely,

John Hickenlooper
United States Senator
