It serves the Samuel Pepys in each of us. The salient characteristic of CoSy is its merging of the doing of something with the recording of its doing. For instance, to dial a phone number, you just put the cursor on the number and tap the F10 key; to record the time, tap (shift)F8; to recall a specific Job, put the cursor on its name and tap (control)F6. Consequently, a person with a CoSy can be expected to maintain far more precise records of their interactions than a person using paper. As illustrated in the discussion of neural nets in APL89 , even fragmentary notes are able to cue and stabilize the memories of associated events. { PRNTfn '2 BMPRNTW ' } øøøThe antidote for dishonesty is disclosureøøø { PRNTfn 'BMPRNT2 ' } Below are my records of interactions with the BedRox, a.k.a 'HeatWave', a.k.a 'PitStop' nightclub. What I had hoped would be an enjoyable and mutually beneficial party came to nought because of their dishonesty -- and my inability to ignore it. { DCNXLNSPglb .02 õ Q 'PRNTfn ''BMPRNTh12 '' EPSMARG 3 '} This spring, I recieved a postcard, at first glance - handwritten, postmarked April 27th, return address: 316 West 49th St./New York, NY 10019. I told him I had never been there, so maybe someone who had enjoyed my Feb 4th, mid-winter party had entered me. Thinking of the APL conference, I said I may have use for the party later. I wanted to do something for the APL conference, and a party at a disco just a few blocks from the conference site seemed ideal. Parties with open bars or some such inducement are not uncommon in Manhattan. I said I had a few other items of business to take care of ( cf: 89.7.17-30 ), and as noted, that I would be there in a couple of hours. When I arrived at BedRox at 5, Mr. Voltaire informed me that Chris had left for Long Island at least 45 minutes earlier. He indicated that this was not unusual behavior for Mr. Baron, using the term 'crackpot'. He commented such behavior may be a reason Mr. Baron is so rich. I told Ronald that the APL conference was the week of August 6th and we concluded that the 10th would probably have to be the date of the party. He also corrected the spelling of his name in my note from 6.22 which I had made after, not during our meeting. { õ QW } |TUE.JUL,1989.7.25,16:53| c> Ronald > Chris Will be there til 20:30 | Penny : business so-so | Chris in meeting w Owner from Miami | they will c< tmro w answer on 10th | Chris |17:35| |17:38| MaxeeGates came up to appologize { õ Q } On the 25th, upon return from a meeting in Westchester County, I called BedRox from Grand Central Station. As indicated, Mr. Baron said he would be there until 8:30 pm. I said I would be coming right over. When I arrived, someone went to their basement office to let them know I had arrived. Ronald Voltaire came up. I said I needed to know whether the party was on or not; I had to get invitations out. As noted, Ron said that Chris Baron was totally tied up in a meeting, and couldn't get away. He indicated that there was an issue of whether a woman associated with the club would be having a birthday party on the 10th or having it on a boat out in Long Island, but otherwise that day would be fine. I said I wanted to meet Mr. Baron and shake hands with him, and Ron went downstairs to see if he could get him. After waiting at least 3 minutes, I packed up my CoSy. A woman came upstairs and introduced herself as Maxee, an associate of Mr. Baron. We shook hands, and she apologized for Mr. Baron. She said she was involved not just with BedRox, but a number of places around the state. We discussed the issues above, and I asked if it might not be possible for my party and the birthday party to coexist. She said that might be a possibility, and promised that Chris would call with an answer the next day. He said the birthday party was happening after all. The room was not available. We would just have to be out in the front of the club with everybody else. I reminded him I had confirmed my party the previous night, and he knew the extent of the commitments I had made. When I refered to my conversation with Maxee Gates, he labeled her 'just a secretary'. When I wouldn't simply drop the issue, Mr. Voltaire had his ample security escort me from the club. I stood outside until after 22:30 to inform people coming to my party that it was off, and giving them invites to an event being sponsored by Baird Jones at JungleJim's on the Upper East Side. They are then of a mentality to renege on issues of 0 direct cost to them, but substantial value to the individual whose offices they have used. The value of CoSy, like APL, comes from the relative 'scale invariance' of the issues it helps with. A deal is a deal, whether big or small.
