Subject: Re: [LPNY DISCUSS] Re: Promoting LP Date: Sun, 5 Oct 2003 12:48:58 -0400 To: From: Bob Armstrong I've been trying to promote the idea of tee shirts or some identifying accoutrement for quite a while , but perhaps too softly . The Mermaid wade last spring was the first time any of us got together presenting a uniform appearance so we presented an identifiable group . True except the bit about reluctance . People Will approach you= Because you are identified , not random . In my quixotic run at Jerrold Nadler in 2000 ( http://cosy.com/boba2k/boba2k.htm ), I made a half dozen long sleeved tee-shirts with " 1 of the Good Guys " on the front and " Join the Libertarian Posse / BobA-in-Y2K / NY.LP.ORG " on the back . Among other things , I used some to thank those who especially helpful , particularly John Clifton and Audrey Cappozi . It was a rush job , the technology used sucked , and they were awfully expensive . But useful I recently looked around the web for custom tee-shirt printers . Some , like http://artapart.com/ , let you embed direct customized marketing links in you own site . http://www.cafeshops.com/ doesn't seem to allow that , but offers a much wider variety of promotional items . Tees can , of course , be worn over warmer shirts in many circumstances , if need be . But would be good to have sweats too . ( I really would love us to have a presence at the Halloween Parade where 10s of thousands would see us . ) Every time I'm at some event , whether in conjunction with the LP or the many events I get to which would make Ron Wieck's skin crawl , I feel naked , wasting an opportunity to be a billboard for the cause . I have been very close to just going ahead and getting myself a tee ( light blue ) with "Manhattan / Libertarian" on the front and NY.LP.ORG on the back . I think it is far more important to present the BRANDS NAME than be clever - I would especially eschew anything graphically complex - that causes even a moment's effort to understand . I would AVOID any negative images like upside-down flags . Stick to Lady Liberty . We need identification , like the Guardian Angels , so someone or some camera scanning a meeting hall can say - oh the Libertarians are here . Chapters could have these standard shirts to loan out to give to activists who actually show up at events . I wanted to bring this up at the next meeting Manhattan LP , but I'd rather get in the face of Joe Scarborough at the Fabiani meeting happening at the same time .
