Subject: Re: [LPNY DISCUSS] Re: Tides Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 22:36:44 -0400 To: From: Bob Armstrong This required me to look around the web a little further then pull out my old ( 1960 ) PSSC highschool physics text and the copy of Feynman's 1963 course which is so good it's still in print . Kepler discovered that the period goes up as the 2%3 power of the radius of the orbit . Basically , the while the= gravitational pull is decreasing as the square of the radius , the distance= the moon has to fall ( that's what it's doing of course ) also goes up as r ^ 2 . so the speed , ( if my head is working right ) has to increase as r . The radial velocity slows down , but the distance traveled goes up . Correct me please Travis . You're the engineer heer .
