Subject: Re: [LPNY DISCUSS] RE: WHY DO WE LOVE? - What's to be done about the poor? Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2004 13:21:20 -0400 To: From: Bob Armstrong My brother Jack is mentally disabled and last year my sister and I moved him out of Little City Foundation in Palatine IL , where he has lived the last 40 years , to his own cabin on the mini-ranch we purchased out by Pike's Peak . Our bills had risen to $50,000 per year and there was clearly pressure for that to rise to $70,000 which was the asserted cost for each resident at the facility who was being paid for by the state . I know from the waste of my own time a great deal of that increase in cost - to more than 2 average Illinois FAMILY incomes was due to absurd amounts of paperwork and unaffordable starry eyed economic decisions pushing such things as small community embedded homes rather than a centralized campus facility . And with no constraint on the cost of medicine they were= pumping more than a dozen pills into him a day - pretty much no matter how bad they made him feel . My sister and I have now got him down to the 3 or 4 necessary anti- epileptic and schizophrenic pills , and he's far more functional and happy . Give him a call , 719-338-4958 , and ask him . He loves having a cell phone , and is an interesting experience to talk to - the first 100 times . With respect to Little City , what started off as a great charitable organization has been nearly ruined by the State's disruptive "charity by force" funding . -- On Tue, 20 Apr 2004 11:25:54 -0400, Blay Tarnoff wrote: >=A0I understand your fear that libertarians may succeed in= stopping >=A0government assistance to retards, but I assure you it is= nothing >=A0personal. =A0In fact, you will be much better off with private= charities, >=A0which can give you the personal attention you need to become a >=A0productive member of society. > >=A0And, as far a slavery is concerned, there are degrees of= slavery. >=A0Paraphrasing Ayn Rand, if you produce and somebody else= disposes of the >=A0fruits of your labor, then you are a slave. =A0It is not= necessary that >=A0there be actual physical scars on your back. > >=A0Blay > >=A0---------------------------------------------------------------= --- > >=A0greghevia wrote: >=A0> >=A0>=A0--- In lpny_discuss@yahoogroups.com, Blay Tarnoff= =A0wrote: >=A0>=A0>=A0G Triest wrote: >=A0>=A0>=A0> >=A0>=A0>=A0>=A0w/o govt subsidies there would be no guarantee >=A0>=A0>=A0>=A0for support of those who are disabled, . . . etc. >=A0>=A0> >=A0>=A0>=A0Translation: we can't be sure that the disabled, etc. will= be taken >=A0>=A0care >=A0>=A0>=A0of in society unless we enslave people and force them to do= the job >=A0>=A0>=A0because there is no "guarantee" that people will take on= the job >=A0>=A0>=A0voluntarily or out of self-interest. >=A0> >=A0>=A0Translation: =A0Whaaaaaa Mommy Whaaaaaaa, the big bad gov't= wants to >=A0>=A0take a few dollars of mine so the retards don't die, whaaaaa,= we're >=A0>=A0slaves because of this eventhough we'll be at the same= standard of >=A0>=A0living whaaaaaa. >=A0> >=A0>=A0You can translate anything anyway you want in Blay's World.= =A0And btw, >=A0>=A0YOU ARE NOT A SLAVE. =A0When i see scars on your back, or= numbers >=A0>=A0tattooed on your arm, then we'll talk. =A0Nobody broke up you= family >=A0>=A0and selectively bred you. =A0Nobody forced you to build the= gas >=A0>=A0chambers to kill your people with. =A0When you can yourself a= slave you >=A0>=A0demean the memory of those who really were slaves, you= flatulent >=A0>=A0trollop. =A0Get over yourself. >=A0> >=A0> >=A0>=A0>=A0Two points: >=A0>=A0> >=A0>=A0>=A01) The notion that because it is theoretically possible= that >=A0>=A0>=A0individuals, because they are free, may all choose not to= do a >=A0>=A0>=A0particular job which they all agree must be done is absurd= from >=A0>=A0both a >=A0>=A0>=A0human nature and an economic standpoint. =A0Would you also= say that >=A0>=A0the >=A0>=A0>=A0government must provide grocery stores because otherwise= there is no >=A0>=A0>=A0"guarantee" that people will get groceries? >=A0> >=A0>=A0A grocery store makes money, a charity should not make= money(if it >=A0>=A0does, it is not a charity). =A0Ergo, a grocery store would pop= up >=A0>=A0naturaly, as it is good from an economic standpoint, and from= human >=A0>=A0nature. =A0BUT charities, are only good from a human nature >=A0>=A0standpoitn. =A0The crippled and retarded are a drain on society= and are >=A0>=A0bad from an economic standpoint. =A0It would be more profitable= to let >=A0>=A0them die. =A0So, at best, you get a standoff between economic= interest >=A0>=A0and human nature. =A0Guess who will win in a free market= capitalism. >=A0>=A0Malodorous coxswain. >=A0> >=A0>=A0>=A0>=A0[T]he charity industry is not non-profit at all. =A0It >=A0>=A0>=A0>=A0truly is a profit making industry that capitalizes on >=A0>=A0>=A0>=A0our basic human goodness and desire to help others >=A0>=A0>=A0>=A0more needy than ourselves. >=A0>=A0>=A0>=A0I have a new outlook on this problem. >=A0>=A0> >=A0>=A0>=A0Yes, this is an excellent point. =A0I'm glad you are finally >=A0>=A0convinced. >=A0>=A0>=A0Halleluja. >=A0>=A0> >=A0>=A0>=A0Blay >=A0> >=A0>=A0Convinced of what? =A0That this problem can be solved by= oversight of >=A0>=A0charities by a gov't of the people? =A0Self-righteous tart. >=A0> --=A0 =A0Bob Armstrong -- http://CoSy.com -- 212-285-1864 Pix+ : .CoSy.MidWinterParty 17 =A0:= http://cosy.com/y04/MidWinter17.htm Computing Environment : =A0http://CoSy.com/CoSy/ A WTC vision : http://CoSy.com/CoSy/ConicAllConnect/ Libertarian Presidential Candidates =A0:= http://CoSy.com/Liberty.htm Restore our Right to Relax : =A0http://ny.lp.org/cgi-bin/petition.cgi?Against_the_Smoking_Ban =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A02004/04/20 12:57:49 PM
