There are a whole range of hydrocarbons all of which have predominately natural sources . Methane for instance has many sources including the one the vegans attack : cow farts . Methane like many of the others photooxidizes to CO . CO only accumulates in the atmosphere during the winter . It's summer concentration appears to have been stable . Reading ahead : Nitric oxides are also produced . I believe they have been very much reduced in modern engines . Sulfur dioxide "is overwhelmingly of anthropogenic origin, with combustion of coal and oil accounting for about 90% of the total and metal smelting (particularly copper) providing a large part of the remainder." ( p 181 ) I believe that the great success in managing these other pollutants is a reason the zealots are wigging out over CO2 which is , of course , the inevitable stable combustion product of carbon compounds . "The present rate of input of carbon into the atmosphere from fossil fuel combustion is 6e12 kg % year in the form of carbon dioxide, over an order of magnitude smaller than the photosynthetic turnover rate."
